The Metric Is Not the Goal!

Updated: Jul 12, 2021

What are your corporate goals? Are they to make certain quarterly numbers? To grow a % of last years numbers? Or even to only drop only a small % from 2019 numbers because of an impact of Covid-19 to your industry?

The great science fiction writer and aeronautical engineer Robert Heinlein said, “in the absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily trivia until ultimately we be become enslaved by it.”

In contrast to the goals listed above, some goals are instead to land on Mars, to cure genetic disorders, or to anticipate customer needs and provide them solutions before they even feel enough discomfort to complain.

I propose to you that the first list are not goals but instead the daily trivia that fill the void when a clearly defined goal is not in place. People flock to contribute to a worthy goal. They are energized, and that energetic collaborative community draws out inspired innovation and these goals become reality. Thanks to the visions and goals of so many before us, there are technologies and comforts in today’s world that are shared across humanity.

Let’s all individually and together with our corporations sit down and find a worthy goal and let it drive us. The metrics along the way will take care of themselves, they can be helpful to track progress to a goal but are meaningless without a goal. There are no “unprecedented times” there is only today.
